green letter aSouth Shore Hospital has again earned an "A" grade rating from The Leapfrog Group, a designation that ranks the hospital among the safest in the U.S. The spring 2018 rating is the fifth consecutive time that South Shore Hospital has earned the group's highest safety grade.

"Receiving another 'A' grade from the Leapfrog Group demonstrates consistency in practice. It shows that our team, especially at South Shore Hospital, has brought this way of thinking into our culture. Safety and quality for our patients is our No. 1 priority," said Gene E. Green, MD, MBA, President and CEO of South Shore Health System.

In late 2017, the Leapfrog Group designated South Shore Hospital as one of its Top General Hospitals in the country, a distinction achieved only by an elite group of hospitals that meet the nation's toughest standards for safety and quality.

"Patient safety is the most important priority at South Shore Hospital," said Ben Asfaw, Vice President of Quality at South Shore Health System. "Our goal throughout our system of care is to ensure our patients receive safe, efficient and effective care. Recognition by the Leapfrog Group speaks to our efforts to this consistently."

Known as the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, safety ratings of A, B, C, D, and F are assigned twice a year to hospitals nationwide based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms. South Shore Hospital was awarded an "A" for its commitment to keeping patients safe and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S.

"This is the only national rating of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and death, such as medical errors, infections, and injuries," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "Receiving an 'A' Safety Grade means a hospital is among the best in the country for preventing these terrible problems and putting their patients first, 24 hours a day."

Developed under the guidance of a Blue Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign letter grades to more than 2,600 US hospitals bi-annually. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
