South Shore Hospital’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery received accreditation as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
To earn the Comprehensive Center accreditation, South Shore Hospital’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure, and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for continuous quality improvement.
“When we started this program, our expectation was to provide comprehensive care for anybody interested in weight-loss surgery on the South Shore,” said Neil Ghushe, MD, FACS, Brigham and Women’s Surgical Associates and Director of South Shore Hospital’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. “Our team has worked incredibly hard to bring that goal to a reality.”
The South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is offered in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Surgical Associates. The program includes state-of-the art surgical treatment as well as a team of experts who provide long-term nutritional and behavioral health support – a key component to long-term weight-loss success.
“The surgery is just one step in a long process to weight-loss,” Ghushe said. “It takes the work of a lot of people to make sure a patient is successful in navigating through their weight-loss journey. This accreditation just reaffirms to people interested in weight-loss surgery that they have a trusted partner here on the South Shore.”
Since April, 2017, the South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has performed more than 100 weight-loss surgeries.
