What it takes to be a Hospice Volunteer

As the Volunteer Coordinator for Hospice of the South Shore, I coordinate the 40 volunteers that support patients and their caregivers across the region.

Our volunteers visit with patients in their homes. They provide respite for caregivers, so that they can go out and do errands, go out to lunch with friends, or take a nap in another part of the house. They also visit patients who are in facilities, where the primary goal is more companionship and stimulation. Each volunteer gives about three or four hours per week of his or her time.

How to Support Children through the Grief Process

When a family experiences loss, many parents struggle to help kids with their grief. But it’s truly the child’s own network of trusted adults who will best help the child to process a death.

South Shore VNA Receives Five-Star Rating for Patient Satisfaction

Posted by South Shore Health System on Aug 14, 2017 9:30:00 AM

South Shore Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) received a five-star rating for patient satisfaction from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on its Home Health Compare website. The five-star rating is the highest rating achieved.

The CMS rating system offers the most comprehensive overview of home health care quality in the country and was created to help patients and their families, and caregivers compare home health care agencies more easily. The data comes from the Home Health Care Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HHCAHPS).

“This recognition is particularly meaningful because these ratings rely exclusively on feedback from patients and their families,” said Jann Ahern, vice president Home & Community Care Operations at South Shore Health System. “Our VNA strives every day to provide the type of care that our patients have come to expect and deserve. This rating confirms that our patients trust and feel confident in the care we provide.”
